Austin Stacks began the defence of the Dr Moynihan Cup with a 1-13 to 2-6 win over St. Michael's, Foilmore at Austin Stack Park yesterday.

David Mannix scored half a dozen points for the reigning Kerry and Munster kingpins who were never headed after Shane O'Callaghan's eighth-minute goal propelled them into a 1-2 to 0-2 lead.

Goals from Bernard Kelly and Sean Fogarty left St. Michael's just a point adrift, 2-3 to 1-7, at the break, but they couldn't get any closer as second half points from Pa McCarthy and Mannix sealed victory for the Tralee side.

Elsewhere, a late John Moynihan goal gave Rathmore a dramatic 2-8 to 2-5 win over Kerins O'Rahilly's. The winners finished the game with 14 men after Aidan O'Mahony - who enjoyed a terrific battle in midfield with fellow county man David Moran - was sent off on a second yellow card in the closing stages.

In the other first round ties, former kingpins Dr Crokes romped to a 2-16 to 0-9 victory over Shannon Rangers, East Kerry were facile 3-17 to 0-8 winners over Ardfert and St. Kieran's overcame Feale Rangers by 2-10 to 0-8.
