All-Ireland club champions Corofin opened their Frank Fox Cup defence with a hard-earned 0-15 to 2-6 victory over Salthill/Knocknacarra in Athenry yesterday.
Five first half frees from Gary Sice gave Stephen Rochford's charges a slender 0-5 to 0-4 interval advantage. The holders extended their lead on the restart before a Shane Maughan penalty left the minimum in it again, 1-4 to 0-8.
Corofin then showed their class by outscoring the Seasiders 0-7 to 0-2 before Maughan's second penalty in the dying moments left a goal between the sides at full-time.
In yesterday's other Galway SFC first round games, Carna-Caiseal defeated Annaghdown 2-6 to 0-9, Kilkerrin-Clonberne edged out Caltra 1-13 to 1-11, Mountbellew/Moylough pipped St. James' 1-6 to 0-8, while Caherlistrane were 0-13 to 1-8 winners of Milltown.
