The GPA is to publicly declare its support for a 'Yes' vote in the forthcoming Marriage Equality Referendum.

The players' body is expected to issue a statement on the matter next Wednesday after a poll of its 2,100 membership found that inter-county players are 6-1 in favour of going public and saying 'Yes'.

The declaration could cause conflict with the GAA who stopped Meath referee David Gough from wearing a Gay Pride rainbow wristband during the Allianz League clash between Dublin and Tyrone in Croke Park in March.

Rule 1.11 of the Official Guide states "the association shall be non-party political" and that no committee, club, Council or representative can take part in any party political movement.

GPA chairman and former Cork hurling goalkeeper Donal Og Cusack was the first GAA star to publicly reveal he was gay in 2008.

A number of high-profile GAA personalities have already publicly voiced their support for the 'Yes' campaign, including Donegal's Eamonn McGee, Dublin's Rory O'Carroll and former Tipperary hurling manager Michael 'Babs' Keating.
