Former Ulster Council president Malachy Mahon has passed away.

The Fermanagh man was president of the provincial council during a very turbulent time for the Association up north, 1974-1977, and also served as vice-president (1972-73) and treasurer (1968-71).

Malachy was also Fermanagh County Board secretary from between 1969 and 1975 and was a Fermanagh delegate to the Ulster Council. As a teacher and school principal, he was a driving force behind the development of gaelic games in his native Irvinestown.

He acted as Naomh Molaise, Irvinestown club president right up to his death and will be remembered as a visionary GAA leader at club, county, provincial and national levels.
