Fitzgibbon Cup: WIT outclass DIT

February 24, 2015

Austin Gleeson - WIT

Champions WIT are through to the semi finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup thanks to a merited 1-18 to 1-7 victory over DIT tonight.

Playing on home soil the Waterford combination controlled matters from start to finish and a 12th minute goal via Stephen Roche helped the winners go 1-4 to 0-1 clear.

However the visitors enjoyed their best spell in the second quarter and a green flag from Wexford star Jack Guiney three minutes from the break, had the Dublin school within shooting distance. But WIT responded with a pointed Pauric Mahony free and the teams retired on a 1-7 to 1-4 scoreline.

Thereafter the Waterford defence kept their opposing attackers in a vice like grip while their own frontmen, with Mahony and fellow Deise star Austin Gleeson to the fore, kept notching valuable points.

Mahony shot 0-8 and Gleeson 0-3 while seven players got on the scoresheet for the winners. In contrast Guiney struck all but one point of the losers tally.

WIT will now contest a Friday semi final with CIT in a repeat of the 2014 final.
