Mayo county board chairman Paddy McNicholas has announced that he is to step down at December's annual convention.

The Kiltimagh clubman informed delegates of his decision at last night's county board meeting. It comes after he came under fire for his mishandling of the recent Mayo senior team management process which led to the resignation of fellow executive members Michael Diskin and Gerry Bourke.

There had been calls for McNicholas' resignation at the time, and this may well have prompted his decision not to seek re-election at county convention in his home town of Kiltimagh on Sunday, December 7.

McNicholas could yet remain on the executive if he succeeds in becoming a Connacht Council delegate.
