Rory Gallagher would be Odhran MacNiallais' choice to take over from Jim McGuinness as manager of Donegal.

Interviews for the vacancy are due to commence this week and Gallagher is nominated along with Cathal Corey, Anthony Harkin and Paddy Carr.

Young Player of the Year nominee MacNiallais has given Fermanagh native Gallagher his vote of confidence.

"He's a top man," he said to The Irish Daily Star, "his knowledge of the game is right up there.

"He's spent three or four years under Jim (McGuinness). Sure what more to you need to manage inter-county than get that experience from Jim McGuinness. He knows the game so well. It's unbelievable."

Gweedore clubman MacNiallais would love to see Jim McGuinness return to the helm in the future but he doubts if it will happen.

He predicts his former manager will go on to achieve "bigger and better things" with Celtic.

"As much as I'd love to (think McGuinness will manage Donegal again) it depends on how he gets on over with Celtic.

"He could go on to bigger and better things. He said himself he won't rule it out so hopefully we will see him back managing Donegal some day.

"What he's done to this Donegal team. When you look back to 2010 - the position this Donegal team were in.

"They were down and out and he turned that around completely. I don't see why he couldn't manage Celtic."
