Lixnaw manager and Limerick legend Ciaran Carey says Paul Galvin is fortunate not to have been seriously injured after he was attacked by a hurley-wielding team official during the Kerry SHC final.

The former Kerry football star was struck by Kilmoyley vice-chairman Paddy O'Sullivan, who ran onto the Austin Stack Park pitch swinging a hurl before the second half was due to start. O'Sullivan was subsequently removed from the pitch by stewards before being removed from the ground.

Galvin went on to play the full game which ended in a draw, but Carey claimed he was "lucky he wasn't decapitated."

Recalling the shocking incident in the Irish Daily Star, the Patrickswell clubman said: "Both clubs were flat to the mat and both were trying to win the game, but outside of that heated exchange after half-time it was a fair and hard, sporting game.

"It's a bit unfortunate that the incident happened because Kilmoyley are a good traditional club, the same as Lixnaw.

"You can do without those kind of scenes after half-time. The county board will have to tighten up the ship for the replay."

In a statement last night, the Kerry county board said its CCC was awaiting the report of referee John Sexton before deciding what course of action to take.

Kilmoyley secretary John Nolan said his club would comply with any investigation.

"An incident happened but I presume the referee will go with what is in his report and the county board will investigate it so we'll cooperate with that," he said.

"The man was removed so we will just have to wait and see what the consequences are. I'm sure the county board will be onto us."
