Jonny Cooper's dad has expressed his gratitude to a good samaritan taxi driver who came to his son's aid after he was attacked with a knife in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The Dublin All-Ireland medalist was brutally slashed in the face and the neck and Brendan Cooper told The Irish Independent his son is recovering from the shocking ordeal in which he was stabbed nine times.

"A passing taxi driver came on the scene as the assailant was running off and very kindly he stopped and helped Jonny by calling the ambulance," Brendan Cooper revealed.

"We are very grateful to that taxi driver.

"I have yet to speak to him but I have his name and number and I will be making contact with him because we very much appreciate the action he took and it probably saved him from a worse fate."
