Landers: Cusack outburst "wasn't appropriate"

Flashback to 1999 as Cork manager Jimmy Barry Murphy and team captain Mark Landers pose with the Liam McCarthy Cup
Mark Landers feels that Donal Og Cusack's harsh criticism of Cork hurling was "ill-timed".

The former Cork custodian launched a stinging attack on the state of Rebel County hurling on The Sunday Game last weekend but his former intercounty team-mate Landers believes he should have bitten his tongue:

"He has made valid points but I think it is ill-timed," says the 1999 All-Ireland winning captain. "It wasn't appropriate on the night Cork were beaten, playing their worst hurling in 20 or 30 years, certainly in my time watching Cork.

"Maybe he could have said what he said about Cork in an RTE review of the season. It's easy to kick people when they're down and [Sunday] night was the lowest point from a Cork point of view in a long time.

"Some of the criticism was warranted. Yes, we do need more coaches but the reality is we all could be doing a bit more. It comes back to that old saying: don't be giving out about the problem unless you're willing to do something about it."
