The performances of the Galway hurlers over the last two seasons have not been up to scratch, says former All-Star Damien Hayes.

The Tribesmen bowed out of this year's qualifiers against Tipperary and, speaking to Galway Bay FM, Hayes said their record since reaching the Liam McCarthy Cup decider in 2012 leaves a lot to be desired.

"We can butter it up whatever way we want but the last two years were a disaster. Just beating Laois isn't good enough, just as a player it isn't good enough.

"We haven't won anything in the last two years, we haven't brought home any silverware, we haven't brought home any medals and I think that speaks volumes and it's not good enough."

As Galway clubs prepare to submit nominations for the role of senior hurling manager, Hayes continued: "We got to an All-Ireland final in 2012, we should have won it, we went to a replay.

"I thought we would have made ground, we would have got into a settled team. We would have started to build on 2012, but we have just beaten Laois in the last two years, it's hugely disappointing, hugely frustrating."
