Former Waterford hurler Ken McGrath is recovering in hospital following open heart surgery.

The former All-Star needed the surgery to stop a life threatening illness and has been in hospital for over ten weeks now.

Open heart surgery was the only option for the Waterford legend and although McGrath faces a long road in his recovery, the early signs are reported to be positive.

The Waterford News & Sport revealed that McGrath has had the condition for years, despite playing at the highest level in hurling for well over a decade.

A major fundraising drive has begun to support the McGrath family and a charity match is set to be played at Walsh Park in late June.
