Nash: it's not my rule

Anthony Nash admits he's 'sick' of people asking him what his opinion is on the 'Anthony Nash rule'.

The Cork goalkeeper's unique style of free-taking, which can see him gain several yards when taking close-in frees or penalties, faced the chop earlier this year when Motion 40 was accepted onto the Congress agenda, only for the Rebel County to be successful in having it dropped.

Speaking at a Guinness Plus App promotion yesterday, which was also attended by European Ryder Cup vice-captain Des Smyth, Nash said: "It's something that I'm sick of talking about to be honest. Jesus like, it's not my rule. Let me go on record: it's not my rule.

"I don't know where this thing's come from. I've never, ever come across a forward that picks the ball on the 20-metre line and hits it on the 20-metre line in my life.

"If you measured it up between the top forwards and me, I guarantee you I'm only gaining two yards maximum.

"People write in the papers that every time I come up the field I'm going to score a goal or kill somebody with a sliothar into the throat or something like that.

"I've stood in front of many a fella that doubled on a ball six yards out and hit me and thank God I'm sitting here in front of ye alive.

"People walk down the street and ask me what are they going to do with my rule. It's not that it bugs me, I just want to know what's the reasoning behind it. If it is for the safety of players then fine but if a full-forward catches the ball in front of me, can they ask him to take it out to the 20-metre line and strike it from there?"
