A teenager has thanked those who saved his life after his heart stopped beating following a gaelic football match.

17-year-old Eunan Murray from Derry was playing for Faughanvale against Steelstown Brian Og's on Monday of last week.

He collapsed as he made his way to the dressingroom after the final whistle and a doctor who had been watching the game performed CPR when he briefly lost consciousness.

Eunan is now at home after receiving treatment at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry and he has undergone tests in the Mater Hospital in north Belfast to establish the cause of the episode.

"I need to thank everybody from both clubs that helped me," the teenager said to the Derry News

"I just remember feeling really sick and dizzy and not a lot else. When I woke up I hadn't a clue where I was. I was just in real shock and I wasn't sure what was going on exactly.

"Monday shows that Gaelic is more than just a game - it's a family."

A post on the Faughanvale club's Facebook page reads: "After a tremendous performance by the minors, and Eunan in particular, I'm sure everyone will join us in wishing Eunan a speedy recovery.

"A special word of thanks to the Steelstown club and members for their speedy and sensitive response to the situation."
