Mayo's Cathal Carolan has become the fifth inter-county footballer in a matter of weeks to be struck by the cruciate curse.

Breakinplay.ie is reporting that the Crossmolina forward has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) at training on Tuesday night. The injury is a major blow to the Connacht champions as they prepare to face high-flying Cork in today's Allianz Football League clash in Castlebar.

Carolan made his championship debut in the rout of Galway last summer before going on to play the second half of the All-Ireland final loss to Dublin. The 24-year-old joins Kerry's Colm Cooper, Cork's Ruairi Deane, Ciaran Kilkenny of Dublin and Meath's Eamonn Wallace in having their seasons ended by cruciate injuries.
