Derry forward Emmett McGuckin points to the hard work that they have put in on the training field as the reason for their impressive start to the league campaign.

McGuckin scored 1-1 in their latest win over Westmeath as Derry continued their unbeaten start to the campaign which sees them on five points after three matches.

Having gained promotion from Division Two last year, many felt that the Oakleafers would do well to retain their top flight status, but so far they have been more than capable of producing results in the division.

And McGuckin told the County Derry Post that they have been working very hard during the week in the lead up to matches.

"Brian does a lot of hard work along with Paddy (Tally) and Paul (McIver) and all the boys in the backroom, but as you say, once we step out on to the pitch, we have to go by what we've worked on during the week.

"It's about everybody buying in. That's the main thing we've been working on this year, everyone buying into the one thing."
