The Monaghan Competitions Control Committee is expected to investigate an incident which led to Ballybay's footballers walking off the pitch during yesterday's senior league game against Magheracloone.

The Irish News is reporting that the reigning Monaghan champions refused to complete the game after county footballer Drew Wylie was the victim of alleged verbal abuse. Wylie, who received a red card for lashing out at the Magheracloone player who is alleged to have made the offensive remarks to him, is a Protestant, though it's understood that the abuse was not sectarian.

After Wylie had made the Ballybay management aware of the comments that had been directed towards him, they decided to withdraw their players and the game was abandoned about 10 minutes into the second half.

Ballybay chairman Martin Gleeson subsequently released a statement which read as follows: "During a senior football league game between Ballybay and Magheracloone, an incident took place on the field.

"This incident was reported to the referee. The Ballybay players then withdrew from the game.

"The Ballybay Pearse Brothers have held a meeting on this matter and it is now with the Monaghan county board for investigation. As chairman of the club, I fully support our player, as does all of the committee."
