Laochra Gael features Jarlath Fallon

March 15, 2013
It was evident from a young age that Jarlath Fallon, or Ja as he's better known, had something special and he became one of Galway's most celebrated footballers, enjoying a long career from 1992 to 2007. His early years with Galway proved lean but he captained the side in 1995 to win the Connacht title after an eight year gap, and he was awarded an Allstar the same year. He was of course an integral member of the 1998 side that brought the Sam Maguire back to Galway after a thirty two year wait, and he was also on the 2001 team, the first winners of the All Ireland Football championship through the qualifier system.

In this programme, he fondly recalls Bosco McDermott as a manager, recalls how close he went to playing rugby fulltime, and of course outines the '98 and '01 victorious campaigns in detail. He decided at halftime in the 1998 All Ireland Fnal against Kildare that he was going to take on responsibility and his second half display was one of the greatest seen in any Final. He also tells of how near to breakup the team came in 2001, but they availed of the new qualifier system.

In this programme he also speaks of his injuries which often threatened his career. Other contributors are Galway teammate, Sean O Domhnaill, Kildare's Dermot Earley and Aodán Mac Gearailt from Kerry.

Laochra Gael was produced by Nemeton TV, based in An Rinn, Co Waterford.
