Hyland: it's too easy to see yellow

Cavan manager Terry Hyland reckons yellow cards "are being given out a bit easy."

Saturday night's Division Three Ulster derby between Cavan and Monaghan at Breffni Park hit the headlines due to the sending-off of five players - including two from Cavan - but Hyland believes the high card count was not an accurate reflection of the play:

"I think maybe this new big buzzword about cleaning up the game, the yellow cards are being given out a bit easy," the Cavan boss says in The Irish Daily Star.

"And the referee hasn't much choice. He's caught once he gives the first one out and he has to give the second one."

Hyland says things might be different "if you were playing summer-time football on good pitches and weather conditions", adding:

"If you have a back competing with a forward and he misjudges it at all, it looks like a foul. He gets nailed.

"Monaghan picked up fouls for something similar. I'd say it probably is harder to get a card in Division One than Division Three.

"If you ask a referee, he might say they are worse footballers in Division Three! It was wet and filthy and lads were losing their feet very easily. There was a lot of slipping and sliding."
