Derry SHC final: Converys inspire Swatragh

September 24, 2012

Derry's Ruairi Convery
County star Ruairi Convery scored 1-4 as Swatragh overcame Banagher to lift the Fr Collins Cup for the first time at Celtic Park.

The Swatragh number 13 put his mark on proceedings just six minutes in with a superb overhead strike into the Banagher net. Chrissy Convery added a point before Banagher responded with scores from Shane Farren and Gary Stevenson. But Swatragh went into the break holding a 2-4 to 0-5 lead thanks to a Chrissy Convery goal on the stroke of half-time.

Banagher pulled back a goal in the 50th minute when Shane Farren crashed home a penalty, but they never seriously threatened the first-time winners, who were appearing in only their second ever decider.

"To start off the game with a goal is always going to work in your favour," a delighted Ruairi Convery told The Irish News afterwards.

"After that, Banagher were always playing catch-up. After scoring the first goal and leading throughout the game, I think that we thoroughly deserved our victory."
