McCarron happy to wing it

Tyrone's Cathal McCarron and Padraig O'Neill of Kildare.
Cathal McCarron is relishing the freedom of his new role as a wing back.

The Dromore clubman proved a potent force in the No.5 shirt as the O'Neill County put together a twelve-match winning run over the Spring and the former Tyrone No.3 reveals in today's Irish News:

"It's nice to get out of full back. It was in the first game of the McKenna Cup that I went to wing back and I suppose it just kicked on from there.

"I have been lucky enough that the games have fallen nicely and it went well for me, and fingers crossed that it keeps going.

"It's a totally different position. At full back, you're there to mark a man. You still have to mark at half back, but you can also play a bit of football.

"It's one of my preferred roles and I'm happy enough with the way it is going at the minute.

"You never cement any position in a Tyrone team. If you start resting on your laurels, thinking you have got your place on a Tyrone team, you'd be sitting on the bench as quickly.

"I keep the head down, work hard with championship coming up, for there are boys nipping at your heels all the time. But hopefully I'll be lucky enough to be selected come championship."
