Ulster U21FC: 14-man Down too strong for Antrim

March 22, 2012
Down 2-11
Antrim 1-9

Down had five points to spare over Antrim in last night's Cadbury Ulster U21FC quarter-final at Pairc Esler, despite playing the final quarter without star midfielder Conor Gough who was sent off for a second yellow card offence.

Underdogs Antrim dominated the early exchanges and were rewarded with a Hugh McNulty goal in the 15th minute. But with Gough and Niall McParland gaining the upper hand at midfield, the home side hit back with three points from Donal O'Hare and another from Mattie Bagnall to take the lead.

Then, in the 25th minute, Ross McGarry rattled the net to give the Mournemen a 1-7 to 1-3 half-time advantage.

Down were never in any danger after O'Hare grabbed their second goal early in the second half. The same player added three more points as the hosts powered to a semi-final meeting with Tyrone on Wednesday week, April 4.
