Ulster U21FC: McGuckian goals blow Monaghan away

March 22, 2012
Derry 3-12
Monaghan 1-3

A bad week for Monaghan got a lot worse when they crashed to a heavy defeat to Derry in a one-sided Cadbury Ulster U21FC quarter-final at Celtic Park last night.

Derry captain Emmet McGuckian helped himself to 2-1 as the home side set up a semi-final meeting with holders Cavan without breaking sweat. They never looked back after Benny Heron, Conlan Bradley and McGuckian landed points in the first five minutes.

Thomas Kerr opened Monaghan's account from a free in the eighth minute, but they remained on the backfoot for the rest of the half as goals from Fergal Duffin and McGuckian, and a string of points, left the Oak Leafers 11 clear at the break.

McGuckian fisted home a third Derry goal in the 41st minute before Stephen Sherry managed a consolation goal for the outclassed Farneymen.
