Leinster U21FC: Westmeath not tested in Carlow

Westmeath's Callum McCormack gets in his shot as Carlow's Jamie Byrne closes in during the Leinster U21 quarter final.

Westmeath produced a dominant second half performance to ease past Carlow's feeble challenge in last night's Cadbury Leinster U21FC quarter-final at the impressive IT Carlow grounds.

Few could have predicted such a one-sided second 30 minutes after Carlow had matched the visitors for much of the first half and were somewhat unlucky to go into the break trailing 0-3 to 0-5. Just back from a stint in the AFL with Richmond, John Heslin started at full forward for Pat Flanagan's side, but had an early goal opportunity saved and was switched to midfield before half-time. From there, he dominated the game, underlining his class with three second half points, including a superb free from close to the left sideline.

After kicking a number of poor first half wides, Carlow fell away badly after the restart when they never looked like scoring. Barry Lambe, Jamie Byrne and Ciaran Moran tried their best, but Westmeath held all the aces with seniors Kevin Maguire, Heslin, Ger Egan and Callum McCormack all prominent.

Centre forward Kelvin Reilly kicked two late points as the Lake County eased to a semi-final meeting with Dublin in Navan in a fortnight's time.
