Leinster U21FC: Foley inspires Carlow to local derby win

March 01, 2012
Carlow 0-14
Wicklow 1-6

Luke Dempsey will come face-to-face with his home county of Westmeath next Wednesday night after guiding Carlow to an impressive Cadbury Leinster U21FC first round victory over neighbours Wicklow in Baltinglass last night.

The Mullingar resident, who famously led the Lake County to All-Ireland glory in the grade in 1999, will now attempt to plot their downfall after a man of the match performance from midfielder Darragh Foley helped Carlow knock out Wicklow for the second year in-a-row. Foley top-scored for the winners with 0-4, with 0-2 of his tally coming from first half frees.

Wicklow, who failed to put up much of a fight last year, were more competitive last night and led twice in the opening quarter after Brendan McCrea scored the only goal. But the visitors recovered to lead by 0-9 to 1-2 at the break.

The Garden County restarted strongly and had reduced the deficit to the minimum by the 42nd minute. Their goalkeeper William Hender-Philips also saved a penalty, but this failed to put Carlow off track as they set up a home quarter-final against Westmeath.
