FL2: Galway reign in Derry

Galway's Gary O'Donnell gets away from Derry's Chrissy McKaigue during the NFL Div 1 game at Celtic Park
Galway impressed as they claimed a 1-15 to 1-11 victory over Derry in Celtic Park.

Alan Mulholland's first league game in charge of the Tribesmen proved very pleasing for the westerners, while the hosts tried hard but could never quite get back on terms after falling behind to Gareth Bradshaw's goal.

John Brennan's charges were first to raise a white flag courtesy of Barry McGoldrick but there was little between the teams as the first six points were shared.

But the Oak Leaf County moved clear when Cailean O'Boyle fisted to the net in the 17th minute to give them a double-scores advantage, 1-3 to 0-3.

The Tribesmen, however, patiently chipped their way back into contention with a couple of points before Bradshaw fired them ahead with the goal, 1-5 to 1-3.

And the well-drilled visitors finished the half strongly to lead by 1-8 to 1-4 at the break.

Mark Lynch pointed to give the hosts an ideal start to the second half and Chrissy McKaigue closed the gap further.

But Galway were keeping their noses in front and Nicky Joyce's point ensured that they remained three to the good, 1-10 to 1-7.

Some nice shooting from O'Boyle had the gap down to the minimum but a run of three late Galway points from Michael Martin, Joe Bergin and Nicky Joyce stretched the gap to four with just a minute remaining.
