FBD league: Kirby shoots down GMIT

January 16, 2012
Mayo 4-11
GMIT 0-11

Four first half goals from Mayo full forward Danny Kirby ensured his side a place in the Connacht FBD league final as they saw off GMIT with ease in Ballinrobe.

The Castlebar Mitchels youngster, who had just made his first inter county start the previous weekend against Leitrim, stunned the students with four goals in the space of 8 minutes leaving his side in pole position at the break - 4-6 to 0-4.

The home side raced into a five point lead with scores from the impressive Conor Mortimer (3) and debutants Evan Regan & Conor O'Shea. Patrick Sweeney got GMIT off the mark with a pointed free on 10 minutes.

The second half seemed to be a shadow of the opening half as the tempo of the game dropped.

GMIT never gave up, centre forward Johnny Ryan hit some impressive points from placed balls but Mayo kept ticking away the score board with scores of their own from Regan, Darren Coen and Mortimer who rounded off the game with three scores in the last few minutes.
