Louth schedule 'seven minute' match

December 01, 2011

Louth County Board Chairman Padraig O'Connor
The Louth Hearings Committee has scheduled what could be the most extraordinary GAA match ever.

Amazingly, the committee have ruled that Naomh Fionbarra and Oliver Plunkett's must play the last seven minutes of their intermediate relegation play off, which was initially abandoned when the floodlights at Clogherhead failed.

At the time, Oliver Plunketts were down to 14-men and when the lights failed, a number of their players left the ground, but the lighting problem was solved some time later, but the game could not go ahead as Plunketts had no team.

The referees' report stated that the result at the time should stand (Naomh Fionbarra were winning), but the Oliver Plunkett's club appealed the decision to the Louth Hearings Committee, who astonishingly decided that the remaining seven minutes of the match should be played.

The Louth CCC was then instructed to reschedule the game within the next fortnight, but Naomh Fionbarra have now lodged an appeal with the Leinster Council.

It is unlikely that the match would go ahead, but if it did, it surely would be the shortest competitive GAA match in the history of the association.

Ironic cries of 'how long is left ref' or 'is there much injury time' may well be heard, while the warm up of both teams would certainly take longer than the 'game.'
