Cavan chiefs set long-term goals

Cavan want to regain the Anglo-Celt Cup - by 2017.

The Breffni County are still miles ahead of the rest of the province in the Ulster Roll of Honour - with 39 SFCs to their credit, 24 more than second-placed Monaghan - but they've only managed one such success in the last 42 years.

As they strive to get back to winning ways, a new 64-page County Board report circulated to the clubs in the county targets winning an Ulster championship within the next six years. Having scooped both the Ulster MFC and U21 crowns this year, the Breffni men seem to be heading in the right direction.

"Cavan needs a five-year strategy for winning an Ulster championship in 2016/17 and then considering whether an All-Ireland is a realistic proposition," reads the report.

"We fully realise that for a variety of reasons Cavan is unlikely to dominate Ulster football the way it did in the past, but we believe that with proper systems and a progressive and positive outlook, it can become competitive again."
