Moran's bad break

Mayo's Andy Moran
Mayo's Andy Moran has been ruled out for the rest of the year after breaking his left leg while training with the Irish International Rules squad.

The Ballaghadereen clubman, who is tipped to win an All-Star, suffered a broken fibula as he was tackled during last Saturday's session in Parnell Park. He is facing up to four months on the sidelines, meaning he will miss next month's trip to Australia for the International Rules series. His aim now is to regain full fitness in time for the start of Mayo's NFL campaign next February.

"I'll be targeting the first round of the National League as my comeback game," he told hoganstand.com.

"While it is disappointing to miss out on the chance to go to Australia, I'm quite relieved because it was a clean break and I should be back playing within three or four months. If it had been my knee, I'd be looking at six or eight months out."

Moran is also relieved that the injury didn't happen during the height of the season.

"It's never a good time to get an injury like this, but if it had happened in June or July, it would have been disastrous. With Ballaghadereen out of the Mayo championship, the only thing I'm only really missing out on is the International Rules.

"I've been lucky up until now as far as injuries as concerned and, as I said, it could have been a lot worse."
