Carlow against NHL change

Carlow celebrate their Christy Ring Cup final win over Down
Carlow have come out against proposed changes to the 2012 NHL campaign.

The National hurling committee has suggested changes to the format of the hurling leagues that would see the top tier split in two and each group comprising of six teams.

This would mean that the likes of Carlow would be in division 2 still, but would not face the likes of Clare, Wexford and Limerick as they have done in the past few years.

Instead, they would be in a division that would consist of Down, Kerry, Westmeath and Wicklow, which Carlow PRO David O'Brien feels hinders the progress they have made over the last few seasons.

"We beat Wexford and nearly beat Clare last year. This year we beat Laois. The new system would effectively mean we have to start all over again. This year we beat Laois," O'Brien told The Nationalist.

"The new system would effectively mean we have to start all over again. To develop hurling in Carlow we need to be playing against the strongest teams possible. There would also be less games too."

At a recent meeting of the Carlow County Board, delegates voted in favour of no change to the current format.
