Leinster U21HC: Wexford hand Laois another hammering

June 23, 2011

Wexford's Rory Sludds gets in his pass as Barry Dunne of Laois closes in during the Leinster U21 hurling semi final at Wexford Park.
Laois' hurling woes continued when their under 21s were annihilated by Wexford in last night's Bord Gais Energy Leinster U21HC semi-final at Wexford Park.

Wexford 7-18
Laois 2-10

Still reeling from last Saturday's 34-point senior massacre by Cork, the O'Moore County suffered another massive setback with this 23-point loss. An impressive Wexford side had them on the back-foot from the throw-in. Emmet Kent, James Breen and Paul Morris posted early points before Morris struck the first goal to give the home side a 1-4 to 0-1 cushion after only seven minutes.

Neil Foyle responded with his second point for Laois, but goals from Liam Og McGovern and Padraig Doran had Wexford cruising by the end of the first quarter. McGovern's fourth goal ended the game as a contest as Wexford took an unassailable 4-11 to 0-5 lead into the break.

Shane Tomkins added the Model County's fifth goal shortly after the restart and it became embarrassing for Laois when Morris and Breen also raised green flags. Late goals from substitute Daniel Lawlor and senior star Foyle put some respectability on the scoreline from the visitors' point of view as Wexford eased into a Leinster final against the winners of tonight's second semi-final between Dublin and Offaly.
