Falling attendances force GAA to cut ticket prices

June 18, 2011

There have been plenty of empty seats at the 2011 championship and the GAA have cut ticket prices as a result
In the wake of a number of poorly attended provincial championship games, the GAA has been forced to cut the price of tickets for Central Council games by €5, but the cost of All-Irelands will rise €10 this year.

The association has been lambasted over the cost of some of their championship games, with stand tickets for a number of their provincial games costing €27 so far this year.

Attendances at individual matches have been way down on expected levels, with even matches involving the Dublin footballers failing to draw crowds which were seen in previous years.

The €5 reduction is for all adult stand prices and terrace prices for this year's GAA Football and Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championships up to and including semi finals.

However, the news has been tempered by the fact that the GAA announced today that prices for All-Ireland finals in September will rise by €10, to a record high of €80. The increase will make no difference to the attendance on All-Ireland final day, as demand for both the football and hurling finals way exceeds supply, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons the GAA feel they can get away with the 14 per cent increase.

"The GAA recognises the need to encourage patrons to attend our games and this price cut signals our intent to ensure our supporters continue to engage with and follow our Championship games," said GAA President Christy Cooney.

Prices for the opening round of the GAA All-Ireland Qualifiers in both codes have been reduced to €15 for entry to the stand and €10 for terrace. Juveniles can enter the stand for €5 or the terrace free of charge.

Up until the semi-finals clubs can also avail of group passes for adult members which are €10 each, as well as another group offer where juveniles enter for €3 with one adult gaining free entry for every ten children.
