Cavan claimed a first Cadbury Ulster U21FC crown since 1996 with a much deserved final triumph over a hotly fancied Tyrone outfit in Brewster Park tonight.

The Breffni County led by 1-5 to 0-4 at the break thanks to a first minute Niall Murray goal and refused to let Tyrone back into the game in the second half.

The major straight from the throw in was the fillip the underdogs needed and ultimately ensured that Terry Hyland's charges were not to endure a second successive provincial U21 final loss.

Senior star Gearoid McKiernan was outstanding for Cavan and his two points before the interval ensured a double scores advantage at the short whistle.

Tyrone were being harried and forced into mistakes, with Matthew Donnelly and Ronan O'Neill scores keeping them afloat.

The large crowd in Enniskillen awaited a Tyrone recovery on the resumption and it looked likely as O'Neill and Niall McKenna pointed to reduce the deficit to just two points.

It was crucial that Cavan settled themselves and scores from Barry Reilly and Jack Brady restored their advantage.

It was tit for tat before a Richard Donnelly point narrowed the gap to 0-10 to 1-9, before an injury time point from Patrick King sealed the win for a joyous Cavan crew, who now face Wexford in an All-Ireland semi-final on Saturday.
