Ulster U21FC: Tyrone time run to see off Monaghan

April 06, 2011
Tyrone 0-11
Monaghan 1-7

Tyrone seemed destined for yet another draw in the Cadbury Ulster U21FC but a late point from substitute John McCullagh finally shook off the attentions of Monaghan in this Brewster Park semi-final.

Early on it looked as though the three-game saga against Down was taking its toll against the O'Neill County as Chris McGuinness' goal on the quarter hour put Monaghan into a five-point lead (1-2 to 0-0).

McGuinness and Keith McEnaney were proving hot to handle but Tyrone stirred from their slumber and a flurry of points in the second quarter from Niall Sludden, Ronan O'Neill and Mattie Donnelly meant they trailed by just 0-4 to 1-3 at the interval.

Two Tyrone points on the resumption levelled the game and from there to injury time the sides' matched each other point for point. As the match went into those additional minutes the score was deadlocked at 1-7 to 0-10 and extra time looked likely - in Tyrone's case for the third time in four U21 championship matches over the past month.

But at the death substitute McCullagh found the target and Tyrone held on to earn a final place against Cavan in the Ulster final next Wednesday evening.
