Connacht U21FC final: Tribesmen power to title
April 03, 2011
Galway 1-10
Roscommon 0-4
Galway claimed their 17th Cadbury Connacht Under 21 Football Championship title on Saturday with a dominant display over holders Roscommon at Pearse Stadium.
The Tribesmen were full value for their victory, which saw them claim their first provincial crown in this grade since 2005, after they had made a blistering start to this decider which saw them move into a 0-6 to 0-2 lead at the interval, with Mark Hehir, Danny Cummins and Patrick Sweeney finding their range, despite playing against a stiff breeze.
Alan Mulholland's men had an 18th minute penalty from Eric Monaghan saved by Naas Connaughton in the Roscommon goal and it gave the Rossies a bit of a life-line as they resumed the second-half in good fashion through scores from Scott Oates and Shane Regan (free).
However, Galway didn't concede again after that and scores from Hehir, Tomas Fahy and the impressive Cummins coasting them seven clear before Adrian Murphy sealed the title for the men in maroon with a late goal.
