U21FC: Ulster saga set for Act Three

March 24, 2011
Tyrone 0-14
Down 1-11
(After extra-time)

The U21 footballers of Tyrone and Down must meet for a third time this weekend after their Cadbury Ulster Football Championship quarter-final replay ended all square after extra-time on Wednesday night.

The sides could not be separated after an extra 20 minutes at Healy Park in Omagh - a week on from an identical scenario at Pairc Esler in Newry.

Both sides were on the brink of victory, with Kyle Coney's late score for Tyrone sending the game to extra-time and a free from Paul Devlin towards the end of extra-time ensuring a third meeting in the saga.

The home side opened up a three-point lead in the first quarter but Down found themselves in front when Connaire Harrison pounced to beat Niall Moran in the Tyrone goal.

Danny Savage then converted two frees to give Down a three-point lead at the change of ends (1-5 to 0-5), and they extended that advantage immediately after the restart.

But Tyrone hit back well with Coney's free taking the game to extra-time, and all the momentum seemed to be moving in their direction when they opened up a three-point lead for the second time on the night in the first additional period.

Down, however, were not to be denied and they grasped the initiative once again after Tyrone were reduced to 14 men with the dismissal of John McCullagh to a second booking, and Devlin's free ensured there would be an Act Three to this drama.
