U21FC: Wexford book semi-final date

March 10, 2011
Wexford 0-13
Kildare 0-12

Wexford edged their way into the semi-finals of the Cadbury Leinster U21FC with victory over Kildare at Bellefield, Enniscorthy on Wednesday evening.

The Slaneysiders had enjoyed an impressive win over Louth first time out but this was an altogether tenser affair in the south-east.

With five minutes remaining and the sides tied at 0-11 apiece, extra-time looked a strong possibility but points from Brendan Halpin and Derek Butler proved the match-winners.

Padraig Fogarty pulled one back for Kildare but the visitors were unable to find an equaliser to keep their championship hopes alive.

In a game of fine margins, Wexford had also led at the interval (0-5 to 0-3) before Fionn Dowling, John McAndrew and Fogarty were all in target as Kildare hit six points in the 12 minutes of the second half to force their way in front.

That purple patch dried up, however, and the Lilywhites could managed just two more scores during the remainder of the game as Wexford ground it out.
