Cork SHC: Sars' come good in the end

October 11, 2010

Sarsfields' captain Alan Kennedy lifts the trophy
Three unanswered points in the closing four minutes handed Sarsfields their second Cork SHC title in three years in front of 11,428 spectators at Pairc Ui Chaoimh yesterday.

Sarsfields 1-17
Glen Rovers 0-18

Traditional giants Glen Rovers looked set for a long-awaited victory when star forward Patrick Horgan fired them into a 0-17 to 1-11 lead with 10 minutes remaining. But Sars' refused to panic and after Tadhg Og Murphy levelled with three minutes of normal time remaining, the wing forward gave them the lead. Then, after Michael Cussen was fouled for a penalty, man of the match Cian McCarthy - son of former county dual star Teddy - opted to tap over to make it a two-point game.

Rovers had one last chance to salvage something from the game, but Horgan's difficult free from the right was blocked and the final whistle sounded immediately afterwards.

Sars' led by 1-8 to 0-9 at the interval, despite registering nine wides to none by their opponents. The only goal came in the 12th minute when corner back Conor O'Sullivan's long-range free went all the way the Glen net.

With Horgan a constant menace, Glen played their best hurling early in the second half when they hit four unanswered points to hit the front. Points from Dean Brosnan, Gavin Moylan and Horgan had them three points clear after 50 minutes, but they couldn't hold on as Sars' rallied late to reclaim the title.
