Probe launched into Laois ref and umpire assault

September 29, 2010
An investigation has been launched into alleged assaults on a referee and an umpire which took place after a Laois IHC semi-final last weekend.

The Laois CCC received referee Liam Moran's report on Monday night after Ballyfin's controversial injury-time victory over Clonaslee/St. Manman's. A goal seven minutes into stoppage-time gave Ballyfin a 1-13 to 1-11 victory and prompted anger among Clonaslee players and supporters who felt the ball had not crossed the line, and therefore the goal should have been disallowed.

They took their fury out on Moran and the umpire who allowed the goal to stand - outgoing Laois minor hurling manager Tony Ryan. It is understood that the referee's report contains up to 12 names and Laois hurling board chairman Kieran Delaney and county board secretary Niall Handy will now lead the investigation into the matter.

Clonaslee/St Manman's have been in trouble on several occasions in recent years and are due to pay a €1,000 fine for a recent incident. Earlier this year, they lost home advantage for all senior games for the second time for a separate incident in which a young player from an opposing team was assaulted.
