Ulster U21FC: Murphy goal sinks Derry
April 04, 2010
Donegal defender Paddy McGrath, gets a hand in to knock the ball away from Derry's Lee Moore during the Ulster U21 Football Championship semi final
Fourteen-man Donegal caused a big surprise when they recorded a four-point win over a much-fancied Derry side at Enniskillen to qualify for the Cadbury's Ulster U21FC final.
Donegal 1-11
Derry 0-10
Backboned by players from their talented minor team that reached the All-Ireland final three years ago, Derry came into this semi-final with high hopes, but despite playing with an extra man for the entire second half after Donegal's Peter McGee was red-carded in the 28th minute, they exited the championship with a whimper.
Donegal laid the foundations for their win in the first half when a goal from Young Footballer of the Year Michael Murphy midway through helped them to a 1-5 to 0-3 half-time lead. The Tir Chonnaill men will face Cavan in the decider on Wednesday night with an All-Ireland semi-final against Tipperary awaiting the winners.
