Ulster U21FC: Donegal see off 14-man Armagh

March 25, 2010

Hectic action from the Donegal versus Armagh Under 21 clash at Enniskillen as Conor Classen, Michael Murphy, Gary McCoey, Danny Murphy, Anto Duffy, and Mark McHugh all search for the ball.
Donegal 1-9
Armagh 0-9

Donegal sealed their place into the semi-finals of the Cadbury's Ulster Under 21 Football Championship last night at Enniskillen, where three points proved the difference between themselves and Armagh.

The winners had made a lively start to this game with top-scorer Dermot Molloy sending over the first point after 50 seconds, before Armagh hit back with three on the trot from Tony Donnelly, Francis Hanratty and Mark Shields to move two in front by the quarter hour mark.

Donegal responded in the best possible fashion when Daniel McLoughlin fed a long ball into full-forward Mark Murphy, who laid off to James Carroll for a coolly taken goal which helped send Jim McGuinness' team in at the break with a 1-5 to 0-5 lead.

Armagh looked to get themselves back in front quickly after the resumption as Hanratty stroked over a free a minute in, but they were dealt a massive blow when their centre-back Gary McCooney picked up a second yellow card after an off-the-ball incident with Murphy in the 41st minute.

After that it was always going to be difficult for the young Orchard men and despite Hanratty doing his best to match Molloy in the scoring stakes to help reduce the difference to one towards the end, points from Leo McCloone and Molloy would make sure of Donegal's place in the last four of the province.
