Sligo are just 60 minutes away from lifting their first Cadbury Connacht U21FC title following yesterday's sensational extra-time victory over Galway at Tuam Stadium.

Full forward David Maye was the toast of the Yeats County after scoring 0-7. Substitute James Hynes also made a big impact for the visitors, chipping in with 0-2, including what proved to be the winning score in extra-time.

Galway, who won the All-Ireland minor title three years ago, were already facing an uphill task at half-time when they only led by 0-6 to 0-5 after playing with the aid of a strong wind. They were denied a goal after 19 minutes when Sligo 'keeper Brian McGovern saved a Michael Martin penalty.

The Tribesmen hit three unanswered points on the restart, but Sligo refused to wilt and with Alan Dunne and Maye on target, they had reduced the deficit to 0-7 to 0-9 going into the final quarter.

Maye left the minimum in it before points from James Clarke and Maye again edged the visitors ahead with four minutes remaining. But Jonathan Ryan forced extra-time two minutes from the end on a 0-10 apiece scoreline.

Sligo led by 0-12 to 0-10 at the end of the first period of extra-time, despite playing against the wind. Hynes made it a three-point game shortly after the restart and while subs Rory Gaffney and Pat Mark O Fatharta replied for Galway, the visitors held on for a famous victory.
