Connacht U21FC: Shine sends Mayo packing

March 18, 2010
Roscommon 2-9
Mayo 1-11

Donie Shine's dramatic winning point five minutes into injury-time propelled Roscommon into the Cadbury Connacht U21FC final at the expense of holders Mayo at Hyde Park yesterday.

Chasing their fifth provincial title on the trot, Mayo looked to have forced extra-time when team captain Kevin McLoughlin fired over a 63rd minute equaliser. But there was still enough time for senior star Shine to slot over the winner from 30 metres after being set up by Paul Garvey.

The football was poor in the first half, with Niall Kilroy's 30th minute goal giving the home side the narrowest of leads, 1-3 to 0-5, at the break. When corner forward Alan O'Hara was sent off on a second yellow card in the 36th minute and Mayo drew level with points form Jason Doherty, Niall Douglas and Shane Nally, the signs looked ominous for Roscommon, but they responded with a 46th minute goal from Brian Murtagh.

Mayo were level within seconds when Alan Freeman netted, but Roscommon looked to have clinched victory when centre back Niall Daly put them a point ahead in the last minute of normal time.

McLoughlin equalised, only for DCU ace Shine to have the final say.
