NFL 2: Down turn on the style

February 07, 2010
Down produced a rousing performance to beat Kildare by 1-16 to 0-8 in the first round of the league at Newbridge.

John Clarke, Martin Clarke and Ambrose Rogers were all outstanding for the runaway winners.

The Mourne County led by 1-7 to 0-6 thanks to a great Paul McComiskey goal on 29 minutes.

It was two points each after eight minutes with Lilywhite scores from Robert Kelly - after 14 seconds - and Karl Ennis either side of a brace from Down's McComiskey.

Kelly and Ennis had each doubled their tally for the hosts while John Clarke's point and Martin Clarke's free had the sides still locked on 0-4 apiece after 21 minutes.

James Kavanagh and Kelly made it 0-6 to 0-5 in favour of Kieran McGeeney's side before Martin Clarke placed McComiskey for the Down goal.

That left four between them at the break and Down went on to dominate…

Cohesive Down pulled away to lead by 1-12 to 0-7 20 minutes into the second period.

Wonderful midfielder Rogers added to his tally with two great points and John Clarke was having an excellent game on the edge of the square for the eye-catching Mourne County.

A Comiskey free put nine between the sides with 15 minutes left.

There was no way back for disappointing Kildare as Down really caught the eye.
