Galway await floodlights decision

January 05, 2010
Galway officials will find out later this week if their latest application for the installation of floodlighting at Pearse Stadium has been approved. County board chiefs are hopeful that, after a three-year battle, they will finally receive the green light to erect floodlighting at the 34,000-capacity Salthill venue. Galway City Council is due to make a decision by Saturday on the back of further information received in recent weeks from Galway county board to erect four pylons. Some local residents have objected to the floodlights, while An Taisce were also opposed to the plan. Several alterations have been made to the original plan. Pearse Stadium Development Committee chairman Frank Burke told the Irish Daily Star: "It (floodlighting) will enhance the sporting life of the city, along with benefiting the domestic tourism industry. It will also enhance businesses around Salthill and that has to be seen as a positive. "Our proposal deserves to be supported and hopefully it will." Temporary lighting was erected at the revamped venue for the 2006 International Rules clash between Ireland and Australia.
