Galway chairman denies disciplinary problem

December 18, 2009
Galway chairman Gerry Larkin has denied suggestions that the county has got a disciplinary problem. Larkin, who was returned unopposed at last night's annual convention, claimed that the ill-tempered county SHC semi-final between Loughrea and Mullagh was the only contentious match played in 2009. Referee and former county player Christy Helebert, who alleged he was assaulted at the end of the game which Loughrea won by a point in controversial circumstances, has sent a file to Croke Park officials asking them to carry out an investigation into the affair. Three players were suspended for 48 weeks, but the bans were subsequently reduced to 12 weeks on appeal. Larkin didn't refer to the incident in his report, but pointed out that it was an isolated case. "This year alone, over 2,000 games were played in all competitions with only one contentious game coming to the fore. Where difficulties are encountered, we will continue to work and support and further train our referees," he said.
