Derry-Armagh tie to launch 2010 championship

12 November 2009

The glamour Ulster SFC clash of Derry and Armagh will launch the 2010 championship on May 16.

The GAA has been criticised in recent years for opening the championship with low-key games, but the preliminary round tie between the Ulster heavyweights at Celtic Park will ensure that next year's championship starts with a bang.

This year, Tyrone manager Mickey Harte had pleaded with the GAA authorities to bring his side's Ulster SFC opener against Armagh forward by several weeks to launch the championship in spectacular fashion at Croke Park. But his pleas were ignored with the game going ahead as scheduled on May 31 in Clones.

As with this year, New York's first championship outing of 2010 is likely to be the first game again, but the highly-anticipated Derry-Armagh clash is next up on the programme and is a game that will excite football fans.
