Hurling final TV ratings higher than soccer

September 08, 2009
Last Sunday's All-Ireland hurling final attracted a bigger TV viewership than Saturday night's World Cup soccer qualifier between Ireland and Cyprus. 912,000 people tuned in to watch the closing stages of Kilkenny's victory over Tipperary at Croke Park. This is compared to the 883,000 people who saw the final minute of the Irish soccer team's 2-1 win in Nicosia. An average of 771,000 people watched the entire hurling final, compared with 633,000 who watched the soccer game. Viewers at home and abroad watched the hurling game online in their droves, with 28,706 live streams over the course of Sunday afternoon. Less than half this figure, 11,081, had logged on to watch the soccer international the previous evening.
