All-Ireland MFC: Hurley the Kingdom hero

August 04, 2009
Kerry 3-15 Roscommon 1-17 (after extra-time) Substitute Kieran Hurley's 75th minute goal handed Kerry an extra-time victory over Roscommon in yesterday's ESB All-Ireland MFC quarter-final at Croke Park. With the sides tied on 2-13 to 1-16, a replay looked to be on the cards until Hurley fielded a high ball and his shot gave Roscommon 'keeper Naos Connaughton no chance. Darren Clabby clawed back a quick point for the beaten Connacht finalists before efforts from Greg Gibson and Eanna O'Connor made the Kingdom's victory safe. John Kennedy's Kerry side opened brightly and led by 0-4 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. But a Colin Compton point in the 30th minute left Roscommon just a point in arrears, 0-5 to 0-6, at the interval. A Mark Reen goal and a point from Donal O'Sullivan eased Kerry into a 1-7 to 0-5 advantage within minutes of the restart, but Roscommon then showed their mettle by reeling off six unanswered points in 11 minutes to edge ahead by 0-11 to 1-7. An expertly converted Niall O'Shea penalty handed the initiative back to Kerry in the 51st minute, but Roscommon rallied again and forced extra-time thanks to a Shane Carroll point and a stunning injury-time goal from Cathal Shine. There was little to separate the sides in extra-time until Hurley's crucial strike five minutes from the end finally broke the Rossies' resistance.
